Inside the Croatian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2026
These photographs were commissioned by the Croatian Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition/ La Biennale di Venezia, commissioned by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.
This year, Croatia is represented by Dubravka Lošić, one of the country’s most established contemporary artists, with a career spanning more than four decades and exhibitions in Croatia and internationally. Her project, Compelled by Fright and Beauty, brings together several important cycles from her artistic practice in a site-specific installation created for Palazzo Zorzi in Venice.
I have had the privilege of documenting Dubravka’s work for the past seven years. Following an artist over such a long period gives you a very different perspective. You begin to see not only individual artworks, but also the evolution of an artistic language, the transformation of ideas, and the relationship between the artist and the spaces in which the work comes to life.
Photographing her work at the Venice Biennale was therefore a particularly meaningful continuation of that story. For this project, I photographed the exhibition at Palazzo Zorzi, documenting the installation, the artworks, and the atmosphere of the Croatian Pavilion. Lošić’s work brings together painting, sculpture, textiles, and found materials, creating a dialogue between the historic architecture of the Venetian palazzo and her distinctive contemporary practice.
The exhibition has also received international attention from art and design publications, including ArtReview, Il Giornale dell’Arte, and designboom, which featured the Croatian Pavilion in its 2026 guide to the Venice Art Biennale.
Compelled by Fright and Beauty is open at Palazzo Zorzi in Venice until 22 November 2026, as part of the 61st International Art Exhibition/ La Biennale di Venezia.
For me, these photographs are more than exhibition documentation. They are another chapter in a seven-year visual story with an artist whose work I have had the privilege of following over time.
